Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, who made his maiden singles Wimbledon final this year, was knocked out of the US Open 2022 in the quarter-finals. Russia's Karen Khachanov won 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 against the firebrand tennis sensation Kyrgios.
Kyrgios was naturally disappointed with the result, but he opted to show his anger in front of the massive crowd. Known to have an extremely short temper, Kyrgios in the past has lost his cool at the officials, opponents, audience members but this time, it was the rackets, not one but two, who were at the receiving end of the 27-year-old's anger.
Frustrated with the loss, Kyrgios repeatedly hit his racket against the turf and destroyed it. But it was just the start as he took another one, which also met the same fate before he started packing his kit bag. The video has gone viral on the internet as Kyrgios has never shied away from publicly showing his anger and this was just another tease of it.
Speaking after the match, the Aussie, who had defeated World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the last-16, said that it was win-all or go home situation for him as having success at Grand Slams now, an early exit from US Open felt like no other tournament really matters.
"I'm obviously devastated. But all credit to Karen. He's a fighter. He's a warrior. I'm just devastated. Just feel like it was either winning it all or nothing at all, to be honest.
"I feel like I've just failed at this event right now. That's what it feels like."
"Honestly I don't even really care about any other tournament. Like, I feel like at the Grand Slams, now having success at a Grand Slam, it's just like no other tournament really matters," Kyrgios further added.
Khachanov, on the other hand, will face Norway's Casper Ruud in the semi-final.
