Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has issued a lookout circular against now-suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammed.
A lookout circular is a notice which prevents a person from leaving the country.
Earlier, Sharma was asked to appear before the Amherst and Narkeldanga police stations in Kolkata, West Bengal. However, she did not appear before them and sought more time, reported news agency ANI.
This all started with Sharma’s comment on the Prophet during a TV debate. Her controversial remarks triggered protests across the country and drew sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP subsequently suspended her from the party. She was booked over her remarks.
On Friday, Supreme Court slammed her for controversial comments and held her responsible for whatever communal incidents are happening across the country.
Coming down heavily on Sharma for her controversial comments, the apex court said that her ‘loose tongue’ has “set the entire country on fire” and that she is “single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country.”
The SC bench further refused to entertain Sharma’s plea for clubbing of FIRs lodged in various states against her for the remark.
On Tuesday (June 28), Kanhaiya Lal, a 47-year-old resident of Udaipur in Rajasthan, was killed in broad daylight inside his shop by two cleaver-wielding men for sharing a social media post in support of Sharma.
Exactly a week before tailor Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death in Udaipur, Umesh Prahladrao Kolhe, a 54-year-old chemist, was brutally killed in Maharashtra’s Amravati district on June 21. Investigators so far believe that Kolhe was killed allegedly in retaliation for a social media post supporting Sharma.
