KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs in the Asia Cup final on Sunday.
  • After SL’s win in the final, fans back home celebrated the team’s success.
  • But the celebration wasn’t just limited to Sri Lanka, as Afghanistani fans in Kabul also enjoyed the success of the Islanders.
Even though Afghanistan wasn’t playing in the final of the 2022 Asia Cup T20 tournament, their fans in the capital city of Kabul celebrated Sri Lanka’s win over Pakistan with the same joy and enthusiasm as they would celebrate their own. The fans came out of their houses to celebrate the Islanders' triumph over the Men in Green. Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup title this year on Sunday (September 11) by defeating Pakistan by 23 runs in the summit clash, which was played at Dubai International Stadium.
Sri Lanka batted first and posted a total of 170 runs for the loss of six wickets. For the Dasun Shanaka-led side, left-handed batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa top-scored by making an unbeaten 71 runs from 45 balls. He remained unbeaten till the end and made sure that his side was able to post a good score on the board.
In reply to a 171-run target, Pakistan suffered two early jolts and then a middle order slump cancelled out their chances of winning the third continental title in their history.
Sri Lanka’s win in the decider brought joy to not just their countrymen but also the fans in India and Afghanistan who celebrated their success.
A video of Afghanistan fans celebrating Sri Lanka’s win (or Pakistan’s defeat, maybe) has gone viral on the internet. In that video, it can be seen that people in Afghanistan were left overjoyed and took to the streets after the end of the Asia Cup final. The Afghans danced and some even were tearful as Sri Lanka, currently going through an economic crisis, registered their sixth title win.
The video comes on the back of criticism of Afghanistan fans by the former greats of Pakistan, who bashed them after clashes were reported between the supporters of Afghanistan and Pakistan after the latter won the match in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup in Sharjah on Wednesday (September 7).
In this year’s Asia Cup tournament, Afghanistan made a good start by winning both their Group B matches, but they were unable to produce the same result in the Super Four stage and suffered defeats in all three matches.
