KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India will host South Africa in 3 T20Is and as many ODIs in September-October
  • Shikhar Dhawan is likely to lead the ODI team
  • Sanju Samson could be named his vice-captain for the series
After the three-match T20I series against South Africa, a second-string Team India will take on the visitors in 3 ODIs from October 6 to 11. The T20 World Cup squad members will leave for Australia after the first leg of the series and the Men in Blue will have a new captain and coach for the 50-over matches.
Shikhar Dhawan has led Team India in the absence of regular captains and the senior batsman is all but confirmed to lead the team once again. Dhawan is likely to have a new vice-captain for the series.
As per ANI, Sanju Samson is likely to assist Dhawan in the series. Should Samson be named the vice-captain, it will be a big promotion for the wicketkeeper-batsman. Samson captained India A to a 3-0 win against New Zealand A in the one-day series and his success could see him become a part of the leadership group in international cricket.
Samson has only played 7 ODIs so far and will be Team India's vice-captain in his only 8th 50-over outing if he gets a promotion. Only Shubman Gill seems to be another contender for vice-captaincy. The right-handed batsman leads Punjab in domestic cricket and has also done captaincy in Deodhar Trophy. He was Prithvi Shaw's deputy in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, which India won.
The selection committee is likely to announce India's ODI squad soon and a clear picture regarding the vice-captain will be out then.
The India-South Africa series will start on Wednesday (September 28) with the first T20I to be played in Kerala. Guwahati will host the 2nd T20I on October 2 while the 3rd T20I will be played on October 4 in Indore. The 3 ODIs are scheduled to be played on October 6, 9 and 11 in Lucknow, Ranchi and Delhi, respectively.
