Mumbai: MMRDA has requested that the state government allocate property in Kanjurmarg so that Metro 6 can build a depot there (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli). The line's construction has reached the halfway point. It is the same place where the integrated depot for Metro 6 and Metro 3 was proposed by the former MVA government under Uddhav Thackeray (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz).
"We have written to the state for the allotment. We aim to commission the line within two and a half years. The land will be needed soon so that depot work can conclude before commercial operations on the corridor begin," The 16 kilometre line will cross the Central and Western Railway tracks before connecting Vikhroli to Lokhandwala via the JVLR. The MVA sought to combine Metro 6 and Metro 3 depots. To do this, the Metro 3 corridor would need to be extended from Seepz to Kanjurmarg.
The current government has come under fire from activists who opposed the Metro 3 Aarey car shed development for their "double standards." Zoru Bhathena, an environmentalist, stated that the Kanjur land was constantly accessible for the Metro 6 depot. No one ever complained to its site, whether it be private parties or the salt department; the Sena-BJP state administration led by Devendra Fadnavis approved and sanctioned construction.
Even when the MVA government gave the MMRDA the Kanjur depot land in October 2020, it was just for the Metro 6 line. Some private parties and the salt department didn't oppose it until the MVA administration decided to move the Aarey Metro 3 depot to Kanjur as well.
