President Droupadi Murmu to visit London on September 17-19 to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu will visit London from September 17 to 19 to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and offer condolences on behalf of the Government of India, said the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday.
The queen passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after remaining the UK's longest-serving monarch for 70 years. She was 96.
The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth will take place on September 19 at Westminster Abbey in London.
President Murmu paid heartfelt tributes to the queen, saying the “world has lost a great personality”.
"In the demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, the world has lost a great personality. An era has passed since she steered her country and people for over 7 decades. I share the grief of people of the UK and convey my heartfelt condolence to the family," she said in a tweet.
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders earlier expressed condolences at the demise of the queen.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had visited the British High Commission in New Delhi on September 12 to convey India's condolences.
India also observed one-day of national mourning on September 11 as a mark of respect to the British monarch.
“In the 70 years of reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, India-UK ties have evolved, flourished and strengthened immensely. She played an important role in the welfare of millions of people around the world as Head of the Commonwealth,” the MEA said in a statement.
“In their messages, they noted that she was a stalwart of our times; a compassionate personality and provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people,” the statement said.
PM Modi earlier said that Queen Elizabeth II would be remembered as a “stalwart of our times”.
“She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour," the Prime Minister said in a tweet after her demise.
