Russian military vehicles in Ukraine have been spotted with various symbols on the sides and roofs. Among those is the letter Z, which is thought to have become a sign of support for Russia's offensive.
It was first spotted emblazoned on Russian military vehicles that rolled into Ukraine's Donetsk region on February 22.
According to Kamil Galeev, former Galina Starovoitova Fellow on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution at the Wilson Center — a Washington DC-based think tank, "Some interpret ‘Z’ as "Za pobedy" (for victory). Others - as "Zapad" (West),” the scholar said on Twitter.
Interestingly, the letter ‘Z’ appears to have woven itself into the Russian wartime narrative despite it not being in the Cyrillic Russian alphabet. The insignia, which is Latin script, has intrinsically become a symbol of the invasion.
The symbol has been met with widespread condemnation from the international community due to Russia's offensive against Ukraine.
Back in March, Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak created quite a stir at the Gymnastics World Cup in Doha by wearing the letter ‘Z’ taped on the front of his shirt as he appeared on the podium next to the Ukrainian gymnast Kovtun Illia, who won the gold.
Russian government agencies have also promoted the "Z" symbol in nationalist messages and videos on VK.
While the Russian military officials have officially not said anything about the symbols, according to military experts, the ‘Z’ marking, along with other symbols, has been painted to communicate where the military units were headed shortly before deployment.
