Washington: Hundreds of people gathered outside the White House on Saturday to protest against the US Supreme Court's ruling that overturned the 1973 Roe v Wade precedent that legalised abortion in the country. The protesters waved banners and shouted slogans like "My body, my choice", reported AFP.
As per reports, there were around 1000 people, mostly women, protested outside the White House. Notably, US President Joe Biden is spending the weekend at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The protest was organised by the Women’s March in response to the Supreme Court ruling. The agitation took place a day after Biden signed an executive order to protect abortion rights throughout the United States.
The executive order also aimed to safeguard access to reproductive healthcare services nationwide. It will include access to surgical and medication abortion and contraception and protecting patients' privacy.
The order, however, dismissed a proposal by some leading Democrats in the Senate and House, who demanded that the Biden administration should permit abortion services on federal land in states where abortion is banned.
On June 24, the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognised a woman's constitutional right to abortion across the country. In a 6-3 ruling powered by its conservative majority, the court upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law that bans abortion. It triggered protests across the US. Notably, a draft version of the ruling indicating the court was likely to overturn Roe v. Wade verdict was leaked in May this year.
