India have already begun their quest for the T20 World Cup 2022, as they have announced their squad for the mega event on Monday (September 12). However, before the T20 World Cup commences, India will have a preparatory bilateral series against Australia where the two heavyweights take on each other in 3 T20Is starting Tuesday (September 20).
India have picked a full-strength side for the series, and almost all members who are part of the T20 World Cup squad will be in action against Australia. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel will return to the squad after missing the Asia Cup 2022 due to injury.
Former India pacer and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra feels that India will need to find the perfect combination for the T20 World Cup in this series vs Australia.
"Close to the World Cup its not only about results. The team will have to figure out what they want. India are playing three spinners at home, something that most teams would not be doing in Australia," Nehra said in an interaction with Cricbuzz.
India had a pretty poor Asia Cup 2022, where they were knocked out of the tournament in the Super Four stages after back to back losses against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The major concern for the Indian team in both these losses was the bowling at the death overs by the fast bowlers. Nehra believes that the choice of bowlers will be a big headache for India.
"There are 5 bowlers in the squad, so you are looking at the bowling side, because you are not sure. The captain, coach and the team management are looking at the fast bowling unit," he said.
However, Nehra also pointed out that India also needs to sort out some issues with the batting order.
"India chased down 147 against Pakistan with difficulty. The team will need to improve overall, not only in the bowling side of things. There are a lot of questions on the combination of the batting order and one can hope that by the time you go into the World Cup, you are clear more or less about what you want," Ashish Nehra concluded.
India play three T20I matches against Australia at Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad on September 20, 23 and 25 respectively. In fact, India suffered a blow before the start of the series as Mohammad Shami was ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19. Umesh Yadav replaced him in the squad.
