Kolkata: The Durga Puja celebrations in parks of the city will not see any Ferris wheels this year as the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to prohibit the setting up of the fairground ride during Puja.
This decision comes after the KMC parks department discussed the matter with the civic officials before granting the oragnisers permission to hold pujas at the parks across Kolkata.
The civic corporation decision comes after consideration of an accident at Ramlila Maidan in Entally earlier this year, where a 26-year-old resident, Priyanka Shaw, had to be hospitalised after she fell off a Ferris wheel on July 4, said a KMC parks department official.
Three people, including the Ferris wheel operator, were arrested after the accident in July.
"This year we made it clear to the puja organisers that no permission will be given for the installation of Ferris wheel at parks. If we find any violation, we will lodge an FIR against the organisers," said the officer, as reported by the Times of India.
The KMC will carry out an inspection of the parks where pujas will be held.
In a similar move in 2009, the civic body had decided to prohibit the Ferris wheel following an accident at Deshapriya Park the previous year during Durga Puja, said an official.
However, later the civic body withdrew that decision and granted permission to the puja organisers for the installation after an expert's inspection report on the safety of the giant wheel was submitted to it.
This year's Durga Puja celebrations will commence in Kolkata on October 1 and the auspicious celebrations where devotees will offer prayers to the idols of Goddess Durga will come to an end on Maha Dashmi on October 5.
