SDRF undertakes rescue operations after bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand

Haridwar: 25 people were killed and others injured after a bus carrying around 45 to 50 people fell into a gorge in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal district on Tuesday evening. The incident took place in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot as the vehicle ferried a wedding procession from Laldhang. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had also visited the Disaster Management Authority office in Dehradun to assess the situation.
"25 people found dead in the Pauri Garwhal bus accident that took place last night in Birokhal area of Dhumakot. Police and SDRF rescued 21 people overnight...injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals," said DGP Ashok Kumar on Wednesday morning.
"The bus accident in Pauri, Uttarakhand is heart-rending. In this tragic hour my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. Rescue operations are underway. All possible assistance will be provided to those affected," tweeted PM Modi.
Rescue operations had been launched with the help of locals soon after the accident. Uttarakhand SDRF Commandant Manikant Mishra had earlier said that four SDRF teams were at the spot.
"A wedding procession had left in a bus from here, Laldhang; an accident occurred. Information is being taken from the family members. Around 40-42 people were on the bus, including women and children. We are in continuous touch with the Pauri police and villagers. So far, 15-16 people have been rescued and sent to the nearest hospital," Haridwar SP City Swatantra Kumar Singh had said in the early hours of Wednesday.
