New Delhi: Late investor Rakesh Jhunjhnwala co-founded Akasa Air, India's newest airline, will allow passengers to bring their pets on board from next month. Now, flyers can take their domesticated cats and dogs with them on the flight from November 1, the bookings for which will begin from October 15.
The airline said it will allow one pet per person on board with weight up to 7 kgs. "We will now allow pets on board on Akasa fights as part of our commitment to creating an inclusive travel experience," said Belson Coutinho, Co-Founder plus CMO, Akasa Air.
"In our first phase of pet policy we will allow domesticated cats and dogs. We will progressively enhance our pet policy going forward," the airline added.
As of now, only Tata-owned Air India allows passengers to carry pets.
Meanwhile, Akasa Air, which commenced operations on August 7 this year, currently has a fleet of six aircraft and they plan to add an aircraft every 15 days. CEO and founder Vinay Dube said, "We are on target to receive 18 aircraft in total by the end of this financial year, 72 in 5 years."
The airline will fly its first Delhi to Bangalore on October 7. The carrier expects to see 300 flights per week by October end, up from 30 flights a day currently.
Akasa Air plans to connect eight cities this year that are Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Delhi, Agartala and Guwahati.
Speaking on the airline’s performance in the first sixty days, Dube said it has been "satisfying". "We are very happy, satisfied with... our performance," Dube said at the conference in New Delhi. He further added that the airline is "on track" as per plans.
