KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Deepak Chahar has been out of action since February 2022
  • Chahar missed the entire IPL 2022
  • Chahar is a contender to make India's T20 World Cup team
In some big news for Indian cricket, Deepak Chahar has resumed bowling and started to play competitive matches too. Chahar has been absent for action for more than five months and last played an international game in February 2022 against West Indies at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
It was in that match that Chahar suffered a quadricep injury and forced him to miss the series against Sri Lanka and the initial part of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, things went from bad to worse for him as he suffered a back injury during his rehabilition at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
The new injury forced Chahar to miss the entire 2022 IPL, the home T20I series against South Africa, and the multi-format tour of England. He has not been named in the squad travelling to West Indies for a three-match ODI and five-match T20I series too.
However, Chahar looks to be nearing full fitness and revealed on Tuesday (July 19) through his Instagram account that he bowled in a match after five months. Making his happiness on being back on the cricket pitch again, the pacer said he felt as happy as when he made his debut. "Bowled in a match after 5 months, felt equally happy when I made my debut," Chahar captioned his post which included a video and hinted at making a return to the national team soon.
Chahar will look to make his comeback in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe and find his name in the squad for the Asia Cup. The right-arm pacer is in contention to make India's T20 Squad and will look to get back to action and remind the selectors of his pedigree.
While Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel have all but assured their name in the squad, the fourth seamer spot in the 15-man squad remains open. Chahar will look to beat his competition and be on the flight to Australia.
