KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • IPL 2023 mini-auction is likely to take place on December 16
  • The venue for the one-day event hasn't been finalised
  • The franchises will have a purse of Rs 95 crore
A day after the BCCI confirmed staging IPL 2023 in home and away format, a report regarding the next auction has also come out. There will be a mini-auction this year as the teams revamped their squads in the mega auction in February earlier this year.
As per Cricbuzz, the mini-auction for IPL 2023 is likely to take place on December 16. The venue for the one-day event hasn't been decided. Should the auction take place in December, it will mean 2nd IPL auction in a year.
There has been only one occasion of two auctions taking place in a year. In January 2018, the BCCI held a mega-auction for the 11th season of the league. In December 2018, a mini-auction was held for IPL 2019. The same could be the case this year. This year's mega auction took place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.
Going into IPL 2023, the franchises have a purse of Rs 95 crore. Since it's a mini-auction, there will be very few releases before the one-day event and few players will be bought in comparison to mega auction. The IPL franchises might be asked to unveil the list of retained and released players by the end of November.
Meanwhile, the report in Cricbuzz adds that there have been several trade requests before the mini-auction. Delhi Capitals is one of the teams which has approached Chennai Super Kings for Ravindra Jadeja. Gujarat Titans have been approached for R Sai Kishore and Rahul Tewatia.
Jadeja's future with CSK is uncertain and his trade, if it happens, will be the biggest in the history of the T20 league.
It will be interesting to see if the BCCI asks Charu Sharma to do the IPL auction or will Hugh Edmeades retain his position. Charu stood for Edmeades during a part of the IPL 2022 mega auction due to medical reasons.
