Congress to protest against price rise from August 17

New Delhi: The Congress party on Thursday announced that it will organise a 'Mehengai chaupal' at all mandis, retail markets and other places in all Vidhan Sabha constituencies from 17th to 23rd August and this will culminate in the party's "Mehengai pe halla bol" rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on 28th August.
The Congress has been targeting the Centre over high inflation, which is over 7 per cent for the last few months. While the Centre cities external factors like Ukraine war and crude price, the opposition party blames the government for the high inflation.
The Congress had also demanded the government to discuss the matter in Parliament, which the Centre did with Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman responding to all the questions raised by opposition leaders.
The grand old party on August 5 had staged a nationwide protest against the Centre. The BJP linked the protest to the construction of ram Temple in Ayodhya and said that the Congress was trying to appease a section of people by protesting on August 5 - the day when PM Modi had laid down the foundation stone of the temple in 2020.
In a series of tweets, FM Sitharaman in May had said the world was passing through difficult times. Even as the world is recovering from Covid, she said, the Ukraine conflict had brought in supply chain problems and shortages of various goods. "This is resulting in inflation & economic distress in a lot of countries," she said.
Replying to questions of the opposition leaders in Lok Sabha, Sitharman earlier this month said that the government and the RBI were taking steps to bring down the inflation but the number was still far better than the US, and other European countries. The US has witnessed nearly 9 per cent inflation for the last few months.
