Ponniyin Selvan 1 has not just made big numbers in the country, but also overseas and that, has pushed the box office figures for worldwide numbers to a whopping Rs 80 Crore. To note, this is, in fact, the biggest opening for a Tamil film. Have a look at the day 1 numbers here.

Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: 1 seems to have gotten an absolutely great start and after its release on Friday, the movie has most definitely managed to become a hit. The film has not just made big numbers in the country, but also overseas and that, has pushed the box office figures for worldwide numbers to a whopping Rs 80 Crore. To note, this is, in fact, the biggest opening for a Tamil film.
The film is an adaptation of the novel by the same name that is written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, and has managed to make a huge collection of Rs 25.86 crore in Tamil Nadu, therefore outperforming SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. Film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan writes, “#PonniyinSelvan part 1 is off to a FANTASTIC start at the box office. The film has grossed ₹25.86 cr on Day 1 in the state. 3rd BIGGEST opener of the year.” The two films that stand ahead of PS1 are Valimai (Rs 36.17 cr) and Beast (Rs 26.40 cr).

As for the Hindu circuit, on the other hand, reports suggest that the film did about Rs 1.75 crore since there's competition from Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan film Vikram Vedha. As for the Pushkar-Gayatri film, the movie has reportedly minted Rs 11.56 cr on its opening day.
Meanwhile, Ponniyin Selvan 1 did register massive advance booking sales and as a result, it has managed to be one of the biggest opener in Tamil Cinema.
The Mani Ratnam film features Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.
Subaskaran’s Lyca Productions presents PS-1. Jointly Produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, Directed by Mani Ratnam, and Music Composed by AR Rahman. PS-1 is now in cinemas in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
