KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Karim Benzema struck his 324th goal for Real Madrid in 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in UEFA Super Cup.
  • Benzema is now the second-highest goalscorer in the club's history.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer at Real Madrid.
Even at the age of 34, Karim Benzema continues going strong. The French striker struck Real Madrid's second goal in the UEFA Super Cup showdown against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday to help his side secure a 2-0 win.
In the process, Benzema overtook Raul Gonzalez, a Real Madrid legend himself, to slot in second in the list of highest goalscorers in the club's history.
It was Benzema's 324th goal for Real Madrid while Raul had struck a total of 323 during his time with Los Blancos. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer for the club having netted a total of 450 goals during his 9-year stay at the club. Beating Ronaldo, however, doesn't look like a possibility for Benzema at the moment.
It was David Alaba who had opened the scoring for Real Madrid, slotting the ball into an empty net after the Frankfurt goalkeeper was beaten to the ball in the air by Casemiro, who diverted the ball towards Alaba. All the Austrian had to do is to put the ball into an empty net.
Benzema then scored a goal himself in the 65th minute. Vinicius Jr. cut into the penalty box from the left and picked out Benzema on the edge of the area. It wasn't the best of connection from the Frenchman and Trapp should've saved the shot ideally, but the ball still went into the back of the net.
The German side remained toothless throughout the contest as Real Madrid lifted the UEFA Super Cup title in Helsinki.
It was also a landmark moment for Carlo Ancelotti who won the Super Cup title for the 4th time in his career. He is the only manager to have lifted the trophy as many times, going past Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Ancelotti has won the Super Cup title twice as the manager of AC Milan and twice as the manager of Real Madrid.
