'He is still playing well': Morne Morkel wants former skipper to represent South Africa in T20 World Cup

Former South African pacer Morne Morkel wants Cricket South Africa to include the former skipper in the team for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Citing an example of the right-handed batter’s top-form in the IPL 2022, the 37-year-old said he is still playing well, moving well in the field and he has done exceptionally well for RCB.

The 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup will start in just a little more than three months' time in Australia. The defending champions will be the favourites to retain the title in their own backyard. But there are other teams as well, who could challenge Aaron Finch & Co. for the top prize.
In the 2021 edition of the tournament, which was played across three venues in the United Arab Emirates, the South African team was unlucky to miss out on a place in the semifinals. They won four out of the five group stage matches, but due to a superior net run rate, England and Australia advanced to the next round.
This year again, they will be among the contenders and have a strong group of players that could prove to be a difference on the big stage. But in between all this, former fast-bowler Morne Morkel has called for the inclusion of former skipper Faf du Plessis in the side for the mega event.
Giving reference to his stupendous form for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022, the 37-year-old urged Cricket South Africa (CSA) to rope him back into the side.
In this year's edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League, Faf finished as the highest run-getter for the Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bangalore. The right-handed batter, who was also the captain of the team this year, amassed a total of 468 runs in 16 matches at an average of 31.20 and a strike rate of 127.52.
"You want all your big-name players to play, and Faf is still playing well at the age of 37," Morkel told ICC Digital.
"He is still playing well, moving well in the field and he has done exceptionally well for RCB (in the IPL). I would like to see those experienced players in the side. That is up to them (Cricket South Africa) to work out, but I am definitely a big fan of it."
Faf finished as the second-highest run-getter in the IPL last year as well, when he scored a total of 633 runs in 16 matches. But he was ignored for the World T20, and this year as well, his chances are very low. He played his last T20I match for South Africa against England in Cape Town on December 1, 2020, in which he scored 52 not out from 37 balls. Faf has not represented the Proteas since the Rawalpindi Test against Pakistan last year.
