Ranchi: Chief Minister Hemant Soren was spotted playing the mandar in Ranchi on Tuesday evening on the occasion of Karam Puja. The visuals surfaced even as the state returned to normalcy following six days of high voltage political drama. Earlier on Monday, Soren had won the trust vote in the Assembly and slammed the BJP for creating an atmosphere of 'civil war and riots' with the aim of winning polls.
Visuals shared online by news agency ANI shows the CM playing the traditional folk musical instrument as onlookers cheer and join in. While some can be seen clapping and singing, others joined him in playing the drums.
A political crisis emerged in the state after a petition by the BJP sought Soren's disqualification from the Assembly in an office of profit case.
The BJP had accused the CM of allocating a mining lease to himself while he held the portfolio in 2021. In February this year, the BJP submitted a memorandum to the state Governor Ramesh Bais seeking disqualification. This was in turn forwarded to the Election Commission which issued a notice to the CM.
The EC had communicated its opinion in this regard to Governor Ramesh Bais on August 25. Though the decision has not yet been made official, there is buzz that the poll panel recommended the CM's disqualification as an MLA.
On Monday, Soren had tabled a confidence motion in the Assembly amid political uncertainty in the state. UPA MLAs in Jharkhand had been shifted to a resort in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh on August 30 amid apprehension that the BJP may attempt to poach the legislators in a bid to topple the government. They returned to Ranchi on Sunday evening to attend the special session of the assembly.
Soren had secured 48 votes, while the BJP walked out during the House proceedings.
