Florida: Tampa police officers took to land, sea and air in pursuit of a Florida man accused of snatching a woman’s wallet after he swam out into Tampa Bay to avoid being arrested. Dewayne Dean, 32, managed to swim about 200 feet offshore before he was captured and taken into custody.
“Around 8 am Saturday, October 1, a woman was robbed in the parking lot of a hotel on N Westshore Blvd when a suspect snatched her wallet and ran. Witnesses saw him flee to Cypress Pointe Beach, which is where officers located him,” the Tampa Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Dean was on the land’s edge but the chase had only begun as he tried to swim away to evade the cops and avoid getting arrested. According to the law enforcement agency, the suspect made about 200 feet into Tampa Bay before he surrendered.
Officers took a picture of the dramatic moment the man appeared to surrender with his hands up as a helicopter hovered right above him.
“You can’t run from the chopper!,” the post says.
Dean is charged with robbery by sudden snatching and resisting officers without violence, according to Hillsborough County jail records accessed by NBC affiliate news website WFLA reported.
But these aren’t the only accusations against him as the police also arrested the offender on warrants for battery (second or subsequent offense), aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, as well as three probation violations: grant theft, possession of cocaine and fleeing to elude police at high speed.
