Chennai: Ten years after he was charged for taking bribe, a former officer of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has been acquitted of all charges by a special CBI court. The officer identified as C Rajan was charged for taking Rs 2 lakh bribe. Rajan served as Additional DG DRI.
The court has also acquitted Rajan's driver Murugasen, who was charged as co-conspirator in the case. The verdict comes a decade after the case was registered against the duo.
It is alleged that the former officer demanded Rs 10 lakh and an Apple i-Pad from the complainant Ubaidullah. Rajan's diver allegedly collected Rs 2 lakh and Apple I-Pad from the complainant on the ex-officer's behalf on March 6, 2012, according to a report in Times of India.
Pronouncing the verdict, the judge stated that analysis of the evidence shows contradictions and they can't be ignored. The court said prosecution has miserably failed to establish the guilt of the accused.
In another incident on Monday, a POCSO court held eight polytechnic students guilty of raping a girl student in 2020 in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.
"The court further said that there was absolutely no material to show that the bribe was demanded or accepted by the defendants Rajan or Murugesan and prosecution failed to prove guilt of the duo," the court order stated. All the accused were tried under 11 sections including sections5/6, 9/10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
