Mumbai: The monsoon season has witnessed a sharp rise in the cases of Dengue and Leptospirosis in Mumbai. BJP leader Ameet Satam has written a letter to BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal raising concern about the alarming rise in cases of Dengue and Lepto.
"11 leptospirosis and 33 dengue patients were found in the month of July. On July 12, five patients with leptospirosis were registered which is alarming. In June, 12 patients with leptospirosis and 39 dengue had found. In July, 243 patients were found with malaria also. This is worrisome and I request you to take immediate preventive measures,” excerpts from Satam's letter read.
Mumbai has also witnessed a sharp rise in the number of Swine Flu cases in the last week. The BJP MLA has also cautioned the Mumbai civic body chief regarding it.
“Swine flu patients are also seen during the monsoon season. In a week’s time, the patients went up to 11 from just three. Swine Flu is highly contagious and immediate measures are required to curtail the rise,” Satam said.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals. Individuals, exposed to such waters, are more likely to be infected with leptospirosis.
The BJP MLA has blamed the troublesome waterlogging in Mumbai for the alarming rise in Leptospirosis cases.
"Frequent waterlogging is seen in Mumbai during monsoons. It is the BMC that is responsible for this troublesome waterlogging because nullahs, rivers and other water outlets are not cleaned properly. When Mumbaikars are forced to walk through this waterlogging, the chances of Leptospirosis increases," Satam said.
