New Delhi: More than 1.2 lakh women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in India, with a mortality rate of over 50 per cent. Cervical cancer is one of the most common and deadliest gynecologic cancers among women that ranges from ages 15 to 44 years.
Various strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing most cervical cancers.
There are usually no symptoms in the early stages of cervical cancer and so it becomes hard to detect. However, there are a few signs, if you notice, they should be treated or screened fast:
  • Watery or bloody vaginal discharge: A watery or bloody discharge can be heavy with a foul smell. Also, if your menstrual periods are heavier than usual then you must see a doctor.
  • Painful urination: If there is pain or discomfort while passing urine, or the frequency keeps increasing, there can be an infection in the urinary tract. But along with this, if you suffer from diarrhoea, bleeding while passing stools, and abdominal and pelvic pain, you must get yourself checked.
  • Fatigue and appetite loss: If along with other symptoms, you experience constant fatigue and loss of appetite which leads to sudden weight loss, there is a sign that you may be suffering from cervical cancer.
  • Dull backache: One of the major symptoms can be dull backache and swelling in the legs, that need serious medical intervention.

Screenings for cervical cancer

It is important to screen yourself once the symptoms become recurrent. A cancer screening should be scheduled to detect changes in the cells of the cervix before they turn into full-blown cancer.
  • Pap smear: It detects abnormal and irregular cells that are growing in the cervix area.
  • HPV test: It detects high-risk HPV infection
Bottom line: A single-dose Human Papillomavirus Vaccine that provides solid protection against cervical cancer has proved to be a game-changer in the prevention of the disease. Hence, the medical fraternity is hoping for a lower number of cervical cancer cases in the future.
