Anurag Kashyap has come down heavily on Yash Raj Films’ head honcho Aditya Chopra for the failure of banners’ recent films. In 2022 thus far, all three YRF releases, Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Akshay Kumar’s Samrat Prithviraj, and Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera have tanked at the box office.
Weighing in on the downfall of India’s premiere production house, the Dobaaraa director said that the biggest problem of YRF is the ‘trial room effect’. He also stated that Aditya needs to empower those he has hired instead of dictating them.
“In Bollywood, cinema is largely controlled by those people and that too second generation that has grown up in trial rooms. The biggest problem with YRF is the trial room effect. You take a story and you want to make a Pirates of the Caribbean out of it, so it becomes Thugs of Hindostan. You take a story and you want to make Mad Max: Fury Road out of it, it becomes Shamshera,” Anurag told Galatta Plus during an interview.
Suggesting that studio heads need to let the filmmakers be, Anurag further added, “You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the world outside, dictating how everybody should be making their films and telling them what to do.”
“If Aditya Chopra has hired a bunch of people, he needs to empower them and not dictate them, not control the casting, not control everything. Sit in your office, hire good people if you trust them, and let them make their film. Which is the mistake he makes. He doesn’t let them (be),” stated the filmmaker.
Heaping praise on Karan Johar, Anurag said that he is on the right path as he does not call all the shots and trusts the people he works with.
Meanwhile, after having an underwhelming few years, YRF has a mega lineup of releases in 2023 including Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger 3.
