Madurai: In yet another major crackdown, Madurai Cyber Crime police arrested a female boarder at a working women-cum-PG hostel for allegedly sending intimate pictures and videos of fellow mates to her male friend.
Police said that the 23-year-old woman, who is a resident of Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram, had come to Madurai in 2021 to study a BEd course at a private college.
For the past six months, she had been residing in the hostel. She became romantically involved with Ashiq, a 30-year-old doctor, while she was in Ramanathapuram, The Indian Express reported.
The woman maintained her relationship with the doctor even after moving to Madurai. Ashiq saw the woman's fellow hostel residents while she was on a video call with him. Ashiq reportedly requested her to show them as well.
A senior cyber-crime wing official said that the woman started recording videos and took pictures of her mates while they were changing, bathing etc. After recording and clicking pictures, the accused sent those files to Ashiq from her phone, the senior official added.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the cyber-crime official said: "On one such occasion, a hostel mate found out about her activity, and when she and other hostel mates checked her phone, they found several intimate videos and photos in her mobile gallery. They informed their hostel warden who registered a complaint with us."
Police claimed that after receiving the complaint on September 22, they started an investigation into the incident right away. When they secured the phone, they discovered that their conversation had been deleted, so they sent the device to a lab for data recovery.
Police arrested the woman on September 22, and the doctor was arrested on September 23.
The woman and the doctor were booked under multiple sections of the IPC as well as the IT Act.
