​More than 1,700 environment activists have been murdered globally in 10 years

New Delhi: According to a recent study, an environmental activist has been murdered every two days on average during the past ten years, reported BBC. According to a report from Global Witness – an NGO that works on natural resources exploitation, more than 1,700 people have lost their lives attempting to stop mining, oil drilling, or logging on their properties.

The deaths of local indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips earlier this year highlighted the lawlessness that exists in some areas of the Amazon.
According to the most recent Global Witness report, when it comes to lethal attacks on environmental protesters and activists, Latin America is very much on the front lines. 68% of the killings, according to the report, occurred on this continent, with Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Honduras recording the highest numbers.
Indigenous people made up a large portion of those murdered, and they were frequently involved in fights to stop land exploitation by mining, oil, timber, or hydropower firms.
Researchers predict that activists will face increasing risks as the world tries to promote the use of fossil fuels in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine. About 200 individuals were slain in 2021, the most recent year for which data are available, at a rate of 4 per week.
While deadly attacks decreased in Colombia and the Philippines, they increased in Brazil and India. 12 mass murders were reported by Global Witness in 2021, with three occurring in India and four in Mexico.
Ten reported murders occurred in Africa, the majority of which occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
15 activists were murdered in Nicaragua by criminal organisations as part of a deliberate campaign against the Miskitu and Mayangna peoples.
