Kalaburagi: A Karnataka police circle inspector (CI) sustained serious injuries and slipped into a coma after he was assaulted by over 40 ganja growers while conducting a raid in Maharashtra. Circle Inspector Srimant Illala (54), attached to Karnataka's Kalaburagi (Rural) police station was waiting for backup in Taruri village of Maharashtra's Umarga taluk when he was ambushed by the gang.
Srimant Illala's team arrived at Taruri, located around 85 kilometres from Kalaburagi, on Friday night to conduct a raid. A ganja peddler who was arrested recently had told the police that he purchased the product from Taruri village bordering Karnataka's Basavakalyan taluk. This information led the police team to the village, The New Indian Express reported.
CI Srimant Illala led a team of eight policemen into the village around 8:00 PM on Friday, the news report said. While they had asked the police station at Manthala for help earlier in the evening, they were advised by the officers at the station not to make the trip to Taruri at night. But the Karnataka police team went ahead with the mission, the report said.
After reaching Taruri, Srimant Illala sent three of his men to the local police station in Umarga to seek help. It was then, the five policemen came under attack by the ganja growers. While the other four officers with him managed to flee the scene, the CI was trapped and brutally assaulted by the gang. The police officer sustained injuries on his face, chest and stomach in the attack using clubs and sharp weapons.
Srimant Illala was found lying unconscious in a field the next morning by a police party that arrived on the scene. He was rushed to United Hospital in Kalaburagi around 5 am on Saturday, the TNIE report said.
