Shamshera box office: Ranbir Kapoor starrer opens surprisingly low, sets alarm bells ringing for Bollywood

Shamshera, which brings Ranbir Kapoor back to the big screen after a hiatus of four years, has failed to take an impressive start at the ticket windows. The slow start of Shamshera is a sign of worry for the Hindi film industry.

It's the same story for Bollywood all over again. A film with a mega star cast, buzz-worthy trailer and songs and a wide release once again takes an underwhelming start at the box office.
Shamshera, which marks Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen after four years, did not live up to its pre-release buzz when it came to the opening day collection. Released on more than 4000 screens, the Karan Malhotra directorial could only rake in Rs 10.25 crores on the day of its release.
Shamshera took a lukewarm start on Friday morning and did not gain much momentum throughout the day. Reportedly mounted on a massive budget of Rs 150 crore, the action entertainer barely touched the double-digit mark on its first day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to share the box office update.
"#Shamshera sends shock waves within the industry, as Day 1 ends on an underwhelming note... National chains poor, single screens below expectations... All eyes on Day 2 and 3 biz... Fri ₹ 10.25 cr. #India biz," tweeted Taran.

An ideal start for the Yash Raj Films’ production, which also stars Vaani Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt, would have been around Rs 15 crore, if not more. Thus, the low opening of Shamshera comes as yet another setback for the banner after Samrat Prithviraj and Jayeshbhai Jordaar.
The trending of Shamshera is indeed alarming for Bollywood as the industry has been going through a lean patch ever since the theatres reopened post lockdowns. In 2022, not a single Hindi film has taken an opening in excess of Rs 20 crore.
On the other hand, KGF: Chapter 2, which had a similar screen count as Shamshera, opened to record-breaking figures of Rs 53.96 crore. Even RRR opened to an impressive Rs 20.07 crore.
As far as Hindi films are concerned, Kartik Aaryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has been holding the fort as the highest day one grosser. The horror-comedy had taken an opening of Rs 14.11 crore.
Coming back to Shamshera, the reviews of Ranbir’s comeback film have been decent to good which should have warranted a much better opening. However, it seems as if the audience is just not ready to give Bollywood films a chance in theatres which is an extremely concerning sign.
