The summer transfer window of the 2022/23 season has finally come to a close after a hectic deadline day on September 1. This was a whirlwind of a window with many records being shattered.
The Premier League spent a total of £1.9 billion, which smashed the record of the most money spent by one league in a single transfer window. In fact, it was a dominance from the Premier League as they spent more than all the other leagues combined this transfer window.
Nottingham Forest, who were just promoted to the Premier League this season, brought in a massive 21 players this window, thus breaking the record for the most players brought in by a team in a single transfer window. Chelsea were the biggest spenders of the window with incomings costing almost £ 275 million.
Most top teams in Europe spent big in the market this time, but some teams really increased their quality, and spent smart on the players thy needed. Here are the three teams that had the best summer transfer window of 2022/23.
3) Arsenal
Arsenal went into the the transfer window after a pretty underwhelming season last time around, where they finished fifth, just below the Champions League spots too and behind arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur. They had a few gaps in their squad that they needed to fill, and they did that pretty well.
With the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, they really needed a powerhouse goalscorer upfront, and they did that by signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City for £45 million, which is an absolute bargain. Jesus adds the goalscoring flair that the Gunner lacked, along with genuine Premier League experience and pedigree. In fact, he has already made a brilliant start to the season scoring 3 goals already.
Another great signing has been that of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City for £32 million, who is a brilliant player who can play in multiple positions. He can fill in at left-back and be a great cover for the injury prone Kieran Tierney. He can also play at central midfield and attacking midfield, thus proving to be a briliant utility player.
Arsenal have also strenghthened their midfield with the addition of Fabio Vieira from FC Porto and a back up goalkeeper in the form of USMNT regular Matt Turner. The Gunners have also brought in Marquinhos, who has been heavily touted as the next big attacking talent from Brazil
2) Barcelona
Barcelona were reeling under economic pressure as they were undergoing their biggest financial crisis in history. However, that did not stop them from making some blockbuster signings this transfer window.
Their biggest deal of the window was definitely the capture of star striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich. With the departure of Lionel Messi last season, Barcelona were definitely missing a star name to lead their line, and Lewandowski perfectly fills in that void. In fact, he will add lots of goals, something that will push them to be serious title contenders.
Raphinha was another brilliant signing for Barcelona, having secured his services from Leeds United for £49 million. He adds thae much needed creativity from the wing that they lacked last season. The signings of Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde provide much needed solidity to the defence.
Frank Kessie's free signing from Barcelona also adds much needed stability in midfield while Marcos ALonso provided good cover in the left-back position.
1) Manchester City
The Premier League champions Manchester City have been the outright winners of this transfer window, with some fantastic incomings that enhance their already world class squad.
Pep Guardiola has always been accused of not filling in the striker's position in the team to replace the legendary Sergio Aguero. The complaints have been answered this time, with propbably the best signing of this transfer window in the form of the arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for a bargain price of £51 million. The Norweigan has already got off to a great start with 9 goals form 5 games including two hat-tricks.
They also added to their attacking depth by purchasing Julian Alvarez from Argentinian side River Plate. The departure of Fernandinho left a gaping hole in their squad, and they filled it up with a pretty solid signing in the form of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds.
They got in Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund, who will provide competition for their defence. They have also brought in left-back Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht, who will be an able back-up to Joao Cancelo.
In fact, Manchester City made quite a lot of money from selling players like Raheem Sterling,Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, making theur net profit the second highest in Europe after Ajax. This makes the window successul from a business point of view as well.
