Assam floods: Situation remains grim; toll rises to 151 after 12 more deaths reported in past 24 hours

The death toll due to floods and landslides in Assam rose to 151 on Wednesday after 12 more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. The flood situation in the state worsened as the affected people due to floods increased to 31.50 lakh.

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday as 12 more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. The death toll to floods and landslides in the state rose to 151 since mid-May this year.
As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 11 people died due to floods and one in a landslide. Around 31.50 lakh people are affected by floods in Assam. The number of affected people increased from 24.92 lakh on the previous day. Silchar town in the Cachar district has been under flood water for the past 10 days.
The town is submerged due to a breach of dyke at Bethkundi, reported news agency PTI. The repair work is underway. In all 28 municipal wards of Silchar, medical camps are being organised by the health department.
"Short-term public health measures must be adopted by the people to prevent the spread of diseases in the post-flood period," Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said as quoted by the news agency. Brahmaputra, Beki, Kopili, Barak and Kushiyara rivers are reportedly flowing over the danger mark. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Bajali and Barpeta districts of the state.
Cachar is the most affected district of the state with 14.30 lakh people suffering from floods, followed by Barpeta district with around 5.50 people affected. As many as 2,675 villages in 79 revenue circles in Assam have been hit by floods. Due to floods, five bridges and 177 roads have also been damaged.
