When he joined Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder, actor Christian Bale was unaware of the existence of the MCU. In the most recent standalone Thor movie, Bale plays Gorr The God Butcher, a monster hell-bent on slaying all gods who ultimately sets his gaze on Thor Odinson.
In Thor: Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the main protagonist. Natalie Portman also returns as Jane Foster/The Mighty Thor, Tessa Thompson plays Valkyrie, Taika Waititi plays Korg, and Russell Crowe joins the franchise as Zeus.
Although many fans consider his portrayal of Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy to be his most enduring performance, Bale has appeared in other superhero movies before Thor: Love and Thunder. He, however, is a skilled actor who received an Oscar for his performance in The Fighter and numerous other honours for his roles in Vice, American Hustle, and The Big Short. Thor: Love and Thunder is Bale's first film in three years; his previous one was James Mangold's Ford V Ferrari from 2019.
After portraying Batman for three movies, Bale claimed to have "absolutely" no reservations about embarking on another comic book movie role in an interview with Total Film. He said that it didn't even cross into his thoughts at all while contemplating the character in Thor: Love and Thunder. Bale continued by saying that although he had read reviews of the movie that hailed his entrance into the MCU and his casting, he had no clue what such reviews were about. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is referred to by the acronym MCU, as most fans are aware, but for Bale it seemed like he had been associated with something else entirely.
Christian stated, “I'd read that, and people would go, 'Oh, look at this! He's entered the MCU!' And I'd go, 'I've done what? I haven't entered s***, thank you very much.' I'm like, 'The MCU?' I had to ask what that was.”
While he was aware that there were numerous Marvel movies and had probably seen at least a few of them, it appears that he was unaware that they were all interconnected as part of the MCU.
Bale has a lot of movies scheduled for this year and ahead, starting with Thor: Love and Thunder, followed by David O. Russell's Amsterdam and Scott Cooper's adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Pale Blue Eye. Bale had been on a break after Ford V Ferrari.
