Senior opening batter Shikhar Dhawan will get a chance to lead the Indian team once again as the second-string Men in Blue side will be up against South Africa in a three-match ODI series. The first game is scheduled to take place at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday (October 6).

Since the first team players, led by all-format captain Rohit Sharma, depart for Australia on Thursday morning to take part in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a second-string team, mostly comprising of domestic cricket and IPL stars, will be at Dhawan’s disposal.

Dhawan, who has led India to ODI series wins over Sri Lanka last year and West Indies in July this year, has to come up with a good show and lead by example to extend his win record as Indian captain. In comparison to others, South Africa are a much better side, and also, they have named a full-strength squad for the upcoming three 50-over matches.

Their batters – Quinton de Kock and David Miller – are in good form and finished as the top-two leading run getters in the three-match T20I series, which they lost by a margin of 1-2.
