Delhi: Man sleeping on pavement crushed to death in hit-and-run accident

A homeless man who was sleeping on the pavement, died after he was crushed under the wheels of a car. The Police have registered an FIR against the vehicle's driver under section 279 (rash driving) and 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

New Delhi: A homeless man who was sleeping on a pavement, died after he was crushed under the wheels of a car, an official said on Sunday. The accused driver, identified as Ashok (31) has been arrested. The Police have registered an FIR under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code as reported by news agency IANS.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sameer Sharma said that a Police Control Room call was received in Mangolpuri police station regarding a fatal accident near Ramlila Ground after which the police reached the spot where a large number of people had already gathered. "It was found that one unknown person had been hit by an unknown vehicle and his head was crushed due to that accident. He was lying on the ground in a pool of blood," the DCP said, as reported by IANS.
The scene of the crime was cordoned off and the victim was shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital immediately, where he was declared 'brought dead' by doctors. A police team was constituted to ascertain the identity of details of the deceased and discovered that he was a vagabond "The spot was inspected, where skid marks of tires were seen. The Mobile Crime team of Outer District was called at the spot and the scene of the crime was inspected and photographed," DCP Sharma said, adding that the Forensic Science Laboratory team also inspected the area, reported IANS. A police team was constituted to obtain the details of the deceased and it was found that the deceased was a vagabond.
Analysis of CCTV footage in the area revealed that the car driven by the suspect was a white-coloured Bolero. The car's details were obtained and the owner was given notice under section 133 MV Act, which revealed that he had given his car to the accused Ashok on rent. The police arrested the accused Ashok from his residence who on interrogation revealed that a generator that was fitted had a tyre that ran over the victim when he was reversing it near the Ramlila ground, due to his rash and negligent driving. Details of the deceased victim are yet to be ascertained, reported IANS.
