KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah picked up 23 wickets in the England Test series.
  • Pacer Bumrah was named the Player of the Series.
  • Bumrah also captained India in the 5th Test match against England.
From leading Team India for the first time in the longest format of the game to breaking multiple Test records, there is no denying that Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah had a memorable series against hosts England. Appointed as the stand-in skipper of the Rohit Sharma-less side in the 5th Test, pace ace Bumrah was named the Player of the Series after the conclusion of the Edgbaston encounter between India and England on Tuesday.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after winning the Player of the Series award, speedster Bumrah refused to call himself an all-rounder. Replacing Rohit as India's captain for the series decider, pacer Bumrah had shattered Brian Lara's world record by smashing 29 runs with the willow in Stuart Broad's over at Edgbaston. Talking about the match in the post-match presser, Bumrah also pointed out that India could have won the series if the rain gods were merciful in the series opener.
"I won't go that far ahead (of calling himself an all-rounder). That's the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us. Ifs and buts can always be there. If you go back, if there was no rain in the first match, we could have won the series. But England played really well. We have drawn the series and both teams played very good cricket and it was a fair result," Bumrah said.
Bumrah picked up 23 wickets in the recently concluded Test series against hosts England. India's numero uno pacer also shattered Kapil Dev's 30-year-old record. The former stand-in skipper holds the record of taking the most number of wickets by an Indian pacer against England in a Test series. Reflecting on his captaincy debut in the high-profile Test series between India and hosts England, the Indian pacer credited head coach Rahul Dravid for guiding and encouraging the Indian team.
"Pant takes his chances. He and Jaddu got us back into the game with their counter-attack. We were ahead in the game. He takes his chances, backs himself and very happy for him. Dravid is always there to guide us and back us. We could have been a little straighter in our bowling lines and use the variable bounce. The captaincy future is not what I decide. I like the responsibility. It was a good challenge, a new challenge. It was an honour to lead the team and a great experience," Bumrah added.
