KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Team India earned an unwanted record in the second T20I against Ireland.
  • The likes of Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, Axar Patel were all dismissed for golden ducks.
  • It was the first time that 3 Indians were dismissed for golden ducks in a single match.
The Indian cricket team concluded the tour of Ireland with a 2-0 sweep. While the first T20I saw the tourists emerge victorious by a comfortable margin, the second match was tantalizingly close. In the closely-fought second match, India also earned an embarrassing record, courtesy of Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel and Axar Patel.
In the second T20I, it was the pairing of Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda that laid the foundation of a big score for India before the middle and lower middle-order performed miserably. Despite the Samson-Hooda duo putting up a second-wicket stand of 176 runs, India went 7 down while putting a total of 225 on the board.
What left many bemused is the fact that the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel and Harshal were dismissed for golden ducks. While all three of them were dismissed by different bowlers in different manners, their first-ball wickets did earn India an unwanted record.
It was the first time in the history of the game that a total of three Indian batters got dismissed for first-ball ducks in a T20I. In fact, no team in the game's history has recorded three or more golden ducks in T20Is while scoring more than 200 runs.
In total, T20Is have seen 34 occasions of 3 or more golden ducks being recorded. The Netherlands sit at the summit of this record with a total of 5 Golden Ducks in a single match.
When it comes to India's overall cricketing history, batters have had three dismissals of ducks in T20Is before. However, they weren't golden ones.
Dinesh Karthik, who had arrived into the series with the tag of 'finisher', would be particularly disappointed to have not contributed more with the bat in the series. In a small stadium where Samson and Hooda had made batting look like a piece of cake, Karthik would've wanted to deliver a better show.
