MG Motor India has announced that it will launch its entry-level Air electric vehicle in the country in early 2023. The Air EV comes based on sister brand Wuling’s Air EV (Code: E230) which was revealed previously in Indonesia. The entry-level EV will be targeted as a mass-segment electric car which could also be placed as the most affordable EV to be sold in India. MG may also tweak the model as per Indian market conditions.
The new MG Air EV comes based on the company’s Global Small Electric Vehicles (GSEV) platform which underpins a variety of models. On the outside, it packs the same funky-looking, boxy design with a full-width light bar connected via chrome strips at the front. This strip flows right into the door-mounted wing mirrors, giving the car an appealing look. Underneath this light bar has been placed the charging port door carrying the MG logo.
The Indian-spec model is likely to be a tad different than the model sold outside. The company is likely to rework the air con and battery thermal management system for India.
While the company is yet to roll out official technical specifications of the India-bound MG EV, the car is likely to come sporting a battery pack capacity of around 20kWh to 25kWh. This battery pack will juice up an electric motor churning out 40 hp of maximum power. The real-world range of this car is likely to be around 150 km. In terms of dimensions, the car is set to have a 2,010 mm wheelbase, while the overall length is likely to be around 2.9 metres, making the car close to 400 mm shorter than the Maruti Alto.
The new MG Air is also likely to undercut Tata Motor's upcoming Tiago EV as the most affordable electric car in the country. More details are likely to follow soon.
