India expresses displeasure over comparing PM Modi with Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman

New Delhi: India has expressed its displeasure after US state department official referred to PM Narendra Modi while talking about immunity to Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman accused of ordering the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey.

In his remarks last week over defending immunity to Saudi Crown Prince, US state department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel cited examples of immunity given to several heads of the state including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Frankly, I fail to understand how the comment on PM Modi was either relevant, necessary or contextual. Our two countries enjoy a very special relationship which is growing from strength to strength and we look forward to working with the US to further deepen it," a report in Times of India quoted MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi as saying.

The MEA spokesperson also clarified that that no proposal for a visit by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US in December has been made by the Indian side.

Bagchi also dismissed reports attributed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and White House spokesperson about the meeting between PM Modi and US President Biden.
