Coimbatore: A petrol-filled bottle was hurled by unknown people near the BJP office in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore on Thursday night, sparking tension in the locality.
The incident came hours after the NIA and the ED carried out raids in offices of PFI and residences of its workers in several parts of the state, including here.
No damages or injuries were reported from the incident. A team of senior officials reached the spot and conducted preliminary inquiry, police said.
Senior BJP leaders staged a protest near the incident area and raised slogans demanding action against the culprits.
The police said that some locals saw a few people moving suspiciously near the BJP office on VKK Menon road before the incident took place, PTI reported.
Police are examining the footage obtained from CCTV cameras installed in and around the area.
"Petrol bomb was thrown at our office, this is how terror attacks come, today raids (against PFI) took place at several places, it is the anniversary of Hindu Munnani leader and BJP national president too is in state," said BJP worker Nandkumar.
In the "largest-ever" crackdown on terror operations, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday conducted searches nationwide at the premises of groups, including Popular Front of India (PFI), and individuals involved in terror-related activities.
The searches were carried out in more than 100 locations in 12 states across the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Maharashtra Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
In the "largest ever probe process till date", the searches are being conducted in residential and official premises of persons involved in terror funding, organising training camps, and radicalising people to join proscribed organisations, the NIA said.
The NIA and ED along with state police also arrested over 100 activists of PFI, including the top leaders of the outfit, for allegedly supporting terrorists.
