Washington DC: Several abortion rights organisations in the United States on Thursday called for nationwide protests on May 14. The organisations decided to stage protests across the country after a leaked draft opinion showed that the Supreme Court is all set to overturn the nationwide right to an abortion.
"We don't have the luxury to waste any time," reported news agency AFP quoting Kelley Robinson, executive director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, as saying. Notably, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund is the political arm of the reproductive health care provider Planned Parenthood.
After the leaked Supreme Court draft surfaced online, protests have already erupted across the US. On Tuesday, rival demonstrators for and against abortion rights staged protests outside the apex court's headquarters in Washington. The news outlet Politico published a draft Supreme Court opinion on Monday.
On May 3, US President Joe Biden termed the draft as "radical". He also urged the voters of the country to defend access to abortion. The US Supreme Court claimed that the 98-page leaked draft ruling was authentic. However, it also said that it was not the final ruling. Meanwhile, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts described the leak as a "betrayal".
The leaked draft termed the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision protecting the right to abortion as "egregiously wrong from the start." The draft opinion was reportedly written by Justice Samuel Alito. In the Roe v. Wade case, the US Supreme Court ruled that access to abortion is a constitutional right.
