Kolkata: Flights to Kolkata were disrupted by bad weather in Bagdogra, necessitating multiple cancellations due to aircraft shortages.
Two planes from Kolkata to Bagdogra that had already taken off turned around after failing to land safely. The arrival of three flights each of IndiGo and SpiceJet and one each of Go First, AirAsia India and Alliance Air were cancelled. Four flights leaving were also cancelled as a result of this, including two flights operated by IndiGo and one flight each by SpiceJet and Go First.
The majority of the cancelled flights were from Bagdogra to the city, although an Alliance Air flight from Lakhimpur and an IndiGo flight from Patna were also affected by the disruption in north Bengal caused by strong winds and rain. In addition, planes from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad had to be rerouted through Kolkata airport.
“The majority of the 29 daily flights could not operate to Bagdogra due to bad weather,” said Bagdogra airport director P Subramani.
A red alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for North Bengal due to the impending high heavy rainfall. There is a severe to very heavy rain warning in effect for many of West Bengal's northern districts. The weather office warned on Tuesday that some regions of South Bengal would experience severe rain.
