Chennai: Three people died and two others sustained severe burn injuries in an explosion at a firework manufacturing and retail unit in a village in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the fireworks manufacturing and retail unit was located in M Puthur village near Capper Hills. An accidental explosion occurred in the godown. The impact destroyed the entire unit, including the godown, manufacturing arena, and retail shop.
Five people were involved in manufacturing fireworks in a godown behind the retail unit on Thursday. Two people reached the retail shop to buy fireworks.
Three people, including two women, died on the spot while two others with severe burn injuries were taken to Cuddalore Government General Hospital. The condition of one of the injured was reported to be critical.
Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his condolences on the deaths of the people in the explosion and announced a solatium of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He asked healthcare authorities to extend the best possible treatment to the injured.
