Fearing daughter would elope with Dalit man, three of a family end life in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur

The man had filed a police complaint that his 28-year-old daughter Archana had been missing. Later in the day, the family suspected that their daughter eloped with a man from Scheduled Caste prompting them to commit 'suicide'.

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident reported from Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka, three of a family committed suicide fearing that their daughter would elope with a man from Scheduled Caste community. The family hailed from Vokkaliga caste.
The victim includes a man, his wife and son. The deceased have been identified as 69-year-old Sriramappa, his 55-year-old wife Saroja and 25-year-old son Manoj. They were residents of Handiganala village in Sidlaghatta taluk.
On Monday, the man had filed a police complaint that his 28-year-old daughter Archana had been missing. Later in the day, the family suspected that their daughter eloped with a Dalit man, according to a report in Indian Express. After the incident, the three members reported took the extreme step.
Police claimed the girl was in a relationship with the man for over three years. Officials said they are yet to locate the girl.
Citing police sources, the report suggested that the couple may have eloped fearing that their families would oppose their relationship. The report further said the family blamed their daughter for their deaths in a suicide note recovered from the spot.
In June this year, a son of a school principal in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh got married to a girl of another caste. Angry over this, the influential people from Mahakul community issued a diktat to expel the entire family from society. Not only this, the their relatives who participated in the wedding ceremony also faced fine by caste leaders.
Disturbed by incident, the principal filed a petition in the Bilaspur High Court that issued a notice to the office bearers of Mahakul community leaders.
