Kolkata: BJP's Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday claimed that the Trinamool Congress government of Mamata Banerjee will "cease to exist" in Bengal by December, and assembly elections will be held in the state along with the Lok Sabha polls in 2024. He said the stage was being set for the removal of the TMC government from the state.
"Wait for a few months, this government will cease to be in power in West Bengal. Mark my words, by December this year, TMC will not be in power in West Bengal. The assembly poll and parliamentary elections will be held simultaneously in 2024 in West Bengal," Suvnendu was quoted as saying by PTI.
The BJP leader has been targeting the chief minister over corruption and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He has been claiming that there would be a Maharashtra-like situation in Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
In Maharashtra, two-thirds of MLAs had walked away from the Sena and formed the government with the BJP. However, in Bengal, Mamata Banerjee has 215 MLAs in the 294-member House. The BJP, on the other hand, has 71 members - it had won 77 seats, but many left the parties to join the TMC.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the BJP was eying to grab power but Mamata returned to government with an even bigger majority. Since then, the ground has further slipped for the saffron party in Bengal as it lost civic polls and byelections to Lok Sabha and assembly seats.
Recently, Mamata was put in a tough situation after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) recovered huge cash from the residence of then sitting minister Partha Chatterjee's aide Arpita Mukherjee. Partha was sacked as minister and party general secretary by Mamata Banerjee.
