Pyongyang: North Korea on Thursday fired two ballistic missiles toward its east coast in the direction of Japan. The development was confirmed by Yonhap news agency said, citing the South Korean military.
It is the second time in two days that North Korea fired ballistic missiles toward Japan. On Tuesday, Pyongyang test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile over Tokyo for the first time in five years.
Thursday's missile launch was carried out by North Korea after joint South Korean and US missile drills. It was the sixth missile launch by Pyongyang in 12 days. The missiles were fired after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting over the missile launch over Japan by North Korea on Tuesday.
Japan immediately condemned the launch. "This is the sixth time in the short period just counting the ones from the end of September," Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said as quoted by news agency Reuters.
Notably, a US aircraft carrier also returned to the waters of the Korean peninsula after Pyongyang fired the ICBM on Tuesday. North Korea condemned the US for repositioning its aircraft in the Korean Peninsula. The USS Ronald Reagan and other warships were deployed in the region.
Meanwhile, the US also blamed Russia and China for supporting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in his nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. The missile fired by North Korea on Tuesday reportedly flew a distance of about 4,600 kilometres at an altitude of almost 1,000 kilometres and also reached a top speed of Mach 17.
