WATCH – Civic apathy turns deadly: Chennai doctor’s car falls into open ditch in Adyar

Chennai civic apathy: A gaping ditch left unchecked by the civic authorities in Chennai resulted in a big accident as a doctor's car overturned. The doctor sustained minor injuries as his car stumbled into a five feet deep ditch dug up by the Chennai Corporation without any warning to the locals.
Chennai: In another case of civic apathy reported from Chennai, a doctor, identified as Nagamalya who works at a private NEET institute, sustained minor injuries when his car fell into a ditch on his way back from work. The ditch was supposedly dug-up as part of stormwater drainage work being carried out by the Chennai Corporation.
Residents in the area allege that no prior warning was given to them by the corporation workers. They feel that when such work is carried out by the corporation, they should be informed so they can be aware and prevent such incidents from happening again.
The Adyar traffic police are currently investigating the case. They are looking into whether the corporation's contractual workers had obtained prior and legitimate permissions to carry out their activities.
They are also analyzing the events that led up to the incident. While the doctor was not badly injured and soon left the place the accident caused a significant amount of traffic congestion before the Adyar traffic police could reach the spot and clear the routes.
Stormwater drain work has also been advanced to May this year as compared to August when it is usually carried out. Adyar is considered to be a posh locality in the city and it is worrisome that such a negligent incident has taken place here. The Chennai Corporation Budget 2022 released in April contains a strong and renewed focus on improving the condition of stormwater drains.
The corporation aims to avoid yet another flood-like situation that has been recurring over the past few years every time the city experiences even a moderate amount of rainfall. According to sources, stormwater drain construction would be considered to be one of the key infrastructure improvements in the city.
