Guwahati: Twelve jihadis were arrested in two districts of Assam for their alleged links with global terror outfits including Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) and Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). Notably, on eof the arrested was a madarsa teacher in the state.
Superintendent of Police, Amitabh Sinha, informed that of the 12 suspected jihadis, 10 were arrested in Jania area of Barpeta district, while one was nabbed from Guwahati.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that two major terror modules were busted in the state in a "nationally coordinated operation".
“From yesterday (July 27) till today, we have caught two Jihadi modules in Barpeta and Morigaon districts of Assam and arrested all the people involved with Jihadi modules. This coordinated action along with the national police agencies, was a coordinated effort and we will get a lot more information from these arrests,” CM Sarma said.
"Some fundamentalists are active to destabilise Bangladesh, and Assam - a border state - has to face the pitfalls associated with that. We are, however, alert to nab them and destroy the modules," the Assam chief minister added.
A teacher of a private madarsa at Soruchola village under Moirabari police station was arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The arrested madarsa teacher was identified as Mustafa alias Mufti Mustafa, who runs a madrassa (Jamiul Huda Madrassa) in the Saharia Gaon village.
Morigaon district police chief Aparna Natarjan said that Mustafa was allegedly involved in various financial transactions and anti-national activities linked to Ansarul Islam.
Ansarullah Bangla Team is affiliated with Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
Seven others arrested are also suspected to be the linkmen of the Ansarul Islam and all teachers of another madrasa in the village.
Mustafa has been accused of indulging in several financial transactions with Ansarul Islam activists Amiruddin Ansari and Mamun Rashid since 2019. Notably, Ansari and Rashid were arrested in Kolkata and Barpeta respectively a few months ago.
