Lumpy skin disease latest figures: Rajasthan, Punjab among India's worst hit states

The lumpy skin disease has become a reason for concern for cattle farmers in many parts of the country as thousands of bovines have fallen prey to it. The viral disease spreads among cattle through mosquitoes, flies, lice, and wasps by direct contact and also through contaminated food and water.

It results in reduced milk production and causes fever and nodules on the skin, loss of appetite and watery eyes which can be fatal. While some states like Uttar Pradesh have reportedly managed to bring the outbreak under control, few other states are struggling to contain it.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Rajasthan and Punjab are the worst lumpy skin disease-hit states in the country. Here is what you need to know about the latest data on the disease that was released by the central ministry:
    A total of 13,99,914 cattle have been affected by the disease in Rajasthan so far. 64,311 animals died due to the disease in the desert state.
  • 1,74,464 cattle have been affected in Punjab where the death tally stands at 17, 721.
  • Gujarat has reported 1,66,968 cases to date. The number of deaths has reached 5,857 in the state.
  • In Himachal Pradesh, the number of confirmed cases now stands at 89,273 and 5,199 animals have died.
  • The total number of confirmed cases has touched 1,10,550 in Haryana where 2,638 bovines have succumbed due to the disease so far.
  • In Rajasthan, the number of susceptible cattle is 1,43,81, 941 while the tally is 62,71,274 in Punjab. The number has reached 25,00,000 in Punjab, followed by 24,00,638 in Himachal Pradesh and 19,32,039 in Haryana.
