The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup T20 tournament that is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka next month is likely to shift out of the island nation. The Sri Lankan Cricket board has reportedly informed the Asian Cricket governing body – the Asian Cricket Council (ACC)– about its inability to host this year’s edition due to the current economic and political developments in the country.
According to a report by news agency PTI, the country’s cricket board informed ACC on Wednesday (July 20) about this decision. The decision came in the wake of a recent announcement made by the board where they postponed the third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to the ongoing crisis.
"Sri Lankan cricket has conveyed that due to the existing political and economic situation in their country, especially where foreign exchange is concerned, it is not an ideal situation for them to host such a mega-event of six teams in the island," an ACC source was quoted as saying by the PTI.
According to the source, the SLC has conveyed the message that the board would like to host the tournament in the United Arab Emirates or some other country. The ACC is likely to make an announcement in the next few days since there is not much time left before the tournament starts.
"UAE is not the final replacement venue; it could be some other country, even India, as the ACC, Sri Lanka cricket will first have to talk with Emirates Cricket Board officials to get final approval for the event," the official added.
The last edition of the Asia Cup, which was played in 2018, took place in the UAE and in which Rohit Sharma-led India defeated Bangladesh in the final. That year, however, it was played in a one-day format and this year it will take place in T20 form to serve as an ideal preparatory tournament for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will take place in Australia from October 16 to November 13.
