KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Vijay Mallya caught up with 'Universe Boss' Chris Gayle
  • Mallya labelled Gayle's recruitment as the 'best acquisition of a player ever'
  • Gayle had scored 608, 733 and 708 runs in first three seasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL
Whether due to injuries or because of the players' national duty, the franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have sought replacement players from the auction roster over the years on a number of occasions. Rajat Patidar, recently was one of the star replacement players, who played an important role for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the knockout games.
However, none more than Chris Gayle has proven to be a pick of the season, probably the IPL. Gayle after playing a couple of seasons for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was ignored at the mega auction ahead of the IPL 2011 in a shock to many. An injury to Dutch-Australian pacer Dirk Nannes provided an opportunity to RCB to seek for a replacement and Gayle had his second calling at the league and he made sure, he wasn't not retained by a franchise ever since.
Gayle in his debut season was one of the main reasons for RCB reaching the final in 2011 under Daniel Vettori as he smashed 608 runs in 12 games striking at 183 including a couple of centuries and three fifties.
Gayle formed a formidable trio with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers as the legendary West Indies batter destroyed bowling attacks and broke records for fun, before being released by the side after 2017.
One of the minds behind Gayle's recruitment, former RCB owner and businessman Vijay Mallya caught up with the 'Universe Boss'. Taking to Twitter, Mallya shared a picture with Gayle while captioning it saying, "Great to catch up with my good friend Christopher Henry Gayle ⁦@henrygayle , the Universe Boss. Super friendship since I recruited him for RCB. Best acquisition of a player ever."
Mallya, who owned United Spirits had acquired the Bangalore-based franchise in 2008 for a whopping sum of USD $111.6 million, only behind Reliance Industries' bid for Mumbai Indians. Mallya resigned in 2016 and United Spirits shut shop before its parent company - British beverage Diageo took over the operations of Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd (RSCPL).
