Hundreds of people in the US received an email from Burger King with a receipt in the early hours of Tuesday. However, the bill was blank.
"Your order will be ready to be picked up at Burger King located at [blank]," the email said.
Confused recipients of the Burger King email took to Twitter to check if they ordered Whoppers in their sleep or if it was a scam.
"Did anyone get a blank Burger King receipt in their email? I’m just confused, I never eat there," one user said.
Another wrote, "Burger King had me tripping in the wee hours of the morning — thinking someone had stole my credit card due to a receipt that I had received through my email. App deleted."
Yet another wrote, "Loving the free publicity #burgerking is getting from accidentally sending everyone a blank receipt. Very clever marketing."
Burger King responded to multiple customer queries on Twitter, saying, "Thank you for reaching out. We are aware of the issue and are investigating internally."
The emails were sent by Burger King's main promotional marketing email address.
A Burger King representative confirmed to Nexstar that an "internal processing error" was responsible for the blank receipts sent overnight into Tuesday morning.
Burger King declined to comment on whether the emails were sent only to customers who signed up for their app or a wider email database.
It did not appear that the people who received the emails were charged.
